The photograph is one of a set commissioned by Howard & Sons, cabinet makers, showing drawings of furniture for a client, M Naruse Esq, believed to be Masayuki Naruse, Japanese businessman (1886-1944). In 1919, Naruse had a large British style house built in Hojo-zaka, Tokyo, designed by architect Josiah Conder, where many international events were held due to its proximity to foreign embassies. It was later destroyed by fire during an air-raid in May 1945.
