Description

The first National Restaurant in New Bridge Street opened in 1918 under the auspices of the Ministry of Food. Developed out of the original national kitchens and war-time soup kitchens, food was self-service and prepared in sight of diners. The photograph is part of a set commissioned by General Electric Company taken to show electric lighting in the restaurant.
