The Bedford Lemere daybook records that this photograph was taken for P&O (the Peninsular & Oriental Steam Navigation Company), who owned the SS Narkunda. The liner was built by Harland and Wolff Limited in 1920 and the photograph was almost certainly taken to document the appearance of the new ship.
In 1942 the SS Narkunda was serving as an auxiliary troop transport vessel during the Allied landings in North Africa when she was bombed, sinking some distance off Bougie to the east of Algiers with thirty-one lives lost.
