Description

The SS Narkunda was built by Harland and Wolff Limited in 1920 and was owned by P&O (the Peninsular & Oriental Steam Navigation Company). The Bedford Lemere daybook records that the photograph was taken for George Jackson and Sons, furnishers, and was almost certainly taken to document the appearance of this area of the new ship.

In 1942 the SS Narkunda was serving as an auxiliary troop transport vessel during the Allied landings in North Africa when she was bombed, sinking some distance off Bougie to the east of Algiers with thirty-one lives lost.
