Description

The Surrey Commercial Docks was an area of industrial dockland on the site now known as the Surrey Quays on the south bank of River Thames at Rotherhithe. This busy industrial dockland handled import and export for the City of London from the end of the seventeenth century right up until 1969, after which point it was redeveloped into a residential area.

The photograph was commissioned by Irwin & Jones Limited, engineers and machinery agents, who were likely to have provided some of the machinery here pictured.
