Description

The Bedford Lemere daybook simply records the name of the vessel as 'SS Empress'. This is likely to refer to one of the contemporary ocean liners whose name begins with 'SS Empress...', for example, the 'SS Empress of Britain' or 'SS Empress of India'. There were other vessels named simply 'SS Empress', but these are recorded as being military vessels rather than civilian liners. The photograph was taken for Hampton and Sons Limited, furnishers, who were likely to have been involved with designing and manufacturing the interior fittings for the ship, almost certainly including the soft furnishings shown in this image.
