Description

This span is the second section to be manufactured, the first is shown in Bedford Lemere photographs numbered BL25858/001-003. The bridge was commissioned by the Union of South Africa, then a dominion of the British Empire, and manufactured at Dawnay's steel engineering works in Battersea. A D Dawnay and Sons Limited commissioned the photograph. The image shows a hand-painted sign leaning against the span, proudly detailing the work and the client. The building in the background of the image is part of Price's Belmont Candle and Soap Works.
