Description

The SS Mongolia was manufactured by Sir W G Armstrong, Whitworth and Company Limited, who commissioned this image to be taken. It is one of a series of photographs of the vessel taken on this date. The ship was ordered by the Pacific and Oriental Steam Navigation Company, who commissioned other photographs in this series, and between 1922 and 1938 she sailed a route beween London and Sydney, Australia. These images were taken three days before her maiden voyage on the 11th of May 1923.

The Bedford Lemere daybook and Ships Register entries for this series of photographs have the vessel's correct name 'SS Mongolia' crossed through and replaced with 'SS Moldavia'; this could be due to a planned renaming of the vessel as such in honour of an earlier P&O ship of that name lost to an enemy torpedo in 1918. However, the renaming does not appear to have been actually carried out. The name 'Mongolia' is just legible on a brass plaque in images BL26607/023 and BL26607/023A.
