Description

The Bedford Lemere daybook records that the photograph was commissioned by 'H J Abrams' which almost certainly refers to Herbert John Sinclair Abrams, architect.

The hospital was built to commemorate members of the Metropolitan and City Police Forces who lost their lives in the First World War, and was opened in 1923 by HRH the Prince of Wales, subsequently the Duke of Windsor. It was constructed in the grounds to the south of Wellesley House, later known as Fortescue House School for Boys, which was during this period in operation as the Metropolitan and City Police Orphanage. The buildings have since been demolished and St James' Catholic Primary School now stands on the site.
