Description

The photograph was commissioned by the Canadian Pacific Railway Company. Van Horne was made general manager of the CPR in 1882, rising to vice-president in 1884 and to president in 1888. His most notable achievement for the company was overseeing the construction of the first Canadian transcontinental railway. The portrait appears to have used an earlier photographic portrait of Van Horne as a basis, the portait held in the collection of the McCord Museum in Montreal. The portrait is dated 1915 and signed by the artist, 'G Musanyi', or similar (partly illegible).
