The Carlton Hotel opened in 1899 and became one of the capital's most fashionable hotels. It was badly damaged during bombing in 1940. It was demolished in the late 1950s and the New Zealand High Commission now stands on the site. The photograph was taken for Bagues Limited, early 20th century art metal workers.
