The Hotel Metropole opened in 1885 as a high class hotel and became a popular venue for banquets, balls and dinner parties. It was requisitioned during the First World War to accommodate government staff, reopening as a hotel in 1921. In 1936 it was leased by the government and once more provided accommodation for government departments, becoming known as the Metropole Buildings.
