Description

The SS Lancastria, formerly known as SS Tyrrhenia, a passenger ship, was built in Glasgow in 1920 for the Cunard Steamship Company. The maiden voyage was made in May 1920 sailing to Quebec and Montreal. In 1924, after refitting, the ship was renamed SS Lancastria and later in June 1940 when operating as a troopship was sunk with the loss of over 5,000 lives. This photograph is part of a set taken when the ship was docked in George V Dock, commissioned by Cunard Steamship Company Ltd.
