Description

The foundation stone of the Sailors' Palace (British and Foreign Sailor's Society's Residential Hostel for Marine Officers) was laid in 1901. The seamen's hostel provided accommodation to the many sailors requiring a place to stay whilst awaiting the departure of their vessels. The building also housed the headquarters of the British and Foreign Sailors' Society. The photograph was taken for Stitson White & Company, heating and sanitary engineers.
