Kirby Hall is an Elizabethan country house dating from 1570, now in the guardianship of English Heritage. The photograph is part of a set taken for G & A Brown, whose business included stone carving. From what has been recorded in the Bedford Lemere daybook, it is not clear why the photograph was taken, but it may have been because G & A Brown carried out some restoration work here. In 1930, the Office of Works took over the management of the building and repairs were subsequently carried out.
