Description

The ruins of the 16th century mansion known as Sopwell House or Lee Hall are also often referred to as Sopwell Nunnery, as they stand on the site of Sopwell Priory, a community of Benedictine nuns. There have actually been two houses on the site, the first of the post-medieval structures being built immediately after the Dissolution of the Monasteries and retaining the cloister garth as a courtyard. This house was torn down towards the end of the 16th century and replaced with another, the ruins of which can be seen in the photograph.
