Description

The earliest of the Charterhouse buildings date from the 14th century and were founded by Sir Walter Manny as the Carthusian Priory of the Salutation of the Virgin Mary. With the dissolution of the monasteries in the 16th century, the Charterhouse became a mansion. In 1611 Thomas Sutton bought the site and established the almshouses known as Sutton's Hospital.
