The Alfred Jewel is inscribed "aelfred mec hect gewyrcan", "Alfred ordered me to be made" i.e. Alfred the Great (871-899). The jewel, of gold and enamel, is covered with rock crystal. It was discovered in 1693, and is kept in the Ashmolean.
