Description

The hospital opened as the ‘Oxford Lunatic Asylum’ in 1826. By 1841 it was known as the ‘Radcliffe Asylum’ or ‘Radcliffe Lunatic Asylum’. It was renamed the ‘Warneford Asylum’ or ‘Warneford Lunatic Asylum’ in 1843, after a generous donation from the philanthropist Reverend Samuel W Warneford. Originally patients were expected to contribute to the cost of their stay; a fund was later established for patients who were unable to pay. By 1921 the hospital was known as ‘Warneford Mental Hospital’, and later became the Warneford Hospital.

Archival History

Negative originally incorrectly attributed to Frederick Ault. Taunt register, volume 6, page 16 makes a distinction between entries above a line - Ault negatives to 17237 - and those below the line, up to 17299, which are fuller and typical of Taunt's own entries in the earlier registers. The entries for Ault are largely abbreviated and lack detail.
