Reconstruction drawing showing the civil settlement (vicus) located to the imediate south of Housesteads Roman Fort, near Hadrian's Wall. The settlement appeared just after the fort was built and was in use until at least the late second century AD.

Description

This illustration was reproduced on page 13 of the 1987 English Heritage guidebook for Hadrian's Wall and in subsequent reprint editions of the same, and again on page 12 of the 2003 edition. Supporting information indicates that this illustration was created by father and son Alan and Richard Sorrell, and there is a reference on the drawing to the image being reproduced in a publication called 'The Soldier's Personal Life'.
