Description

Between 1227 and 1272, Richard, Earl of Cornwall, was responsible for huge construction projects at Launceston Castle. During this period, stone perimeter fortifications were added, along with the insertion of the High Tower within the shell keep (here pictured), the addition of the walls flanking the motte and the adjoining D-shaped tower. A similar view of the eleventh century timber defences can be seen in illustration IC057/003, with a similar view of the twelfth century stone defences and early form of the shell keep in illustration IC057/002.
