Reconstruction painting showing monks processing to the altar in the Anglo-Saxon Friar's church at the pre-Conquest monastery on Lindisfarne, shown in around AD652. The church was constructed of oak and had a thatched roof.

Description

The pre-Conquest monastery and its church were replaced by the later post-Conquest priory buildings in the eleventh and twelfth centuries. The precise location of the old monastery church is unknown but is possible that it occupied the same site as the later priory church.
