Description

This stone church was constructed to replace the seventh century timber church of the original Anglo-Saxon monastery at Lindisfarne, which housed the shrine of St Cuthbert but was abandoned after Viking raids beginning at the end of the eighth century. This illustration was reproduced on page 21 of the 1988 English Heritage guidebook for Lindisfarne Priory and Holy Island, and in subsequent reprints.
