Description

In 1909 the Society of Antiquaries of London obtained permission to excavate at Old Sarum, and Lieutenant-Colonel William Hawley was put in charge of operations, with DH Montgomerie as site surveyor, draughtsman and photographer. The antiquarian Sir William St John Hope oversaw operations from London. However, it is unclear which, if any, of these gentlemen may be depicted in this image.

The illustration is one of a set of eight small conjectural reconstructions created in about 2004, and may have been included in an exhibition at the site in 2004; see IC074/012 and IC074/036 - IC074/040 for other drawings in the set.
