Description

The background to this illustration is a reconstruction drawing of how the theatre's interior may have appeared when established in the nineteenth century (see separate reconstruction illustration IC0081/033). The sketch of a proposed viewing platform in the theatre is a paper 'overlay', added digitally to a scan of the reconstruction drawing (see separate illustration IC081/034). The illustrations combined in this image appear to form a concept drawing for a potential reconstruction of the theatre in the Keep. Note: this illustration, in this form, exists in digital format only.

It is thought that the interior decoration of the theatre conforms to the style of contemporary theatres on the Continent, and so the conclusion is that it may have been created for the French prisoners of war kept at the site in the nineteenth century.
