Description

Sir Thomas Cornwallis was the last castellan of Portchester Castle and made significant improvements to the east ranges of the castle complex in the early seventeenth century, in order to transform the site into a more comfortable residence.

This is an updated, amended version of an earlier original ink painting created in April 1983 on the same sheet (see IC081/016). Note: the original illustration exists only as a digital scan). The same artist has amended the original drawing some years late by adding watercolour to the illustration. The original drawing was one of seven phased reconstructions of the castle, shown from the same viewpoint throughout its development.

This painting is one of four phased colour reconstructions of the castle, shown from the same viewpoint throughout its development.
