Description

It is thought that the interior decoration of the theatre conforms to the style of contemporary theatres on the Continent, and so the conclusion is that it may have been created for the French prisoners of war kept at the site in the nineteenth century. This illustration was reproduced on page 10 of the 2008 English Heritage guidebook for Portchester Castle.

A sketch of a proposed viewing platform in the theatre on a paper 'overlay' was added digitally to a scan of this reconstruction drawing (see separate illustration IC081/034), appearing to create a concept illustration for a potential reconstruction of the theatre in the Keep (see IC081/028. Note: the concept illustration, in the combined form, exists in digital format only).
