Cut-away reconstruction illustration depicting the keep at Rochester Castle, as it may have appeared in about 1140, shortly after it was constructed. The keep is shown from the north, with much of the walls and roof 'cut away' to reveal the interior.

Description

This is a watercolour painting over a high-quality copy of an original drawing. An earlier, very similar version of this image was created in December 2011 (see IC087/002/), but it was this later version of the illustration that was reproduced on page 7 of the 2012 English Heritage guidebook for Rochester Castle.
