Description

The Norman castle was begun in circa 1068, soon after the Normans reached the south-west of England. The castle and its defences were imposed upon the layout of the existing Saxon town. A view of the town in the fourteenth century, shown from the same viewpoint, can be seen in illustration IC101/004. This illustration was reproduced in black and white on page 12 of the 1992 English Heritage guidebook for the castle, and in colour on page 14 of the 1998 guidebook.
