Description

The settlement was known as Letocetum during the Roman period, and originally provided accommodation for Imperial officials travelling along Watling Street, the Roman military road that ran from east Kent to North Wales. The first mansio is likely to have been built in the mid-first century, and was subsequently rebuilt on the same site a further two times during the following two centuries. This illustration was reproduced in black and white on the front over of the 1994 English Heritage guidebook for Wall Roman Site, and subsequently in colour on page 12 and on the back cover of the 1999 English Heritage guidebook for the site.
