Description

The store at 16-20 Goose Gate (or 16-20 Goosegate) was the first Boots shop to be opened by Jesse Boot, after his father set up an herbalist store on the same street in 1849. The premises at nos. 16-20 were built in mid 19th century and altered 1881-84 by Richard Charles Sutton for Jesse Boot. The shop was restored and converted in around 1980, and although the date of this photograph is not known it was probably taken after this restoration work.
