Foundation stones were laid at the George Street store by Stanley Howard Burton, Raymond Montague Burton and Arnold James Burton in 1936. Granite facades featured on around 15 Burton stores built in the 1930s, for example in Kingston upon Hull and Reading. The dark stone fascia of the George Street store may be a small-scale continuation of these designs.
