Description

A two storey addition containing two rooms was constructed at Schomberg House for Thomas Gainsborough, who lived in the west wing between 1774 and 1778. It is thought that the upper room was used by Gainsborough as a studio. The rooms were connected to the house by timber passages: the lower corridor was plain, while the upper corridor shown in this sketch plan was arcaded and had lunette windows and roof lights. Two short flights of steps in the upper corridor were separated by a landing. In the mid 20th century Schomberg House was reconstructed behind its original facade
