The original caption reads: "Man outsoars Nature. The Skylon towers above one of the trees planted in the Exhibition grounds."
Architects Michael Powell, Philip Powell, and Hidalgo 'Jacko' Moya won the 'vertical feature' competition for the South Bank Exhibition with their design for the structure which was later named the 'Skylon'. It was built in 1950-1951, with the assistance of structural engineer Felix Samuely. The name of the structure was reputedly an amalgamation of words including 'pylon' or 'nylon', and 'skyhook' or 'sky'.
