St Mary's Church was founded in the Late Saxon period but largely rebuilt in the post conquest period. In the early 990s, Aethelred II founded (or possibly refounded) a regular monastery at Cholsey. Cholsey had no abbot's recorded after the 1010s, and seems to have reverted to being a secular minster. The earliest church on this site of which traces remain was probably of the first half of the 11th century. The present central tower has long and short work at the angles but the church is almost wholly 12th and 13th century with 14th, 15th and 19th century work.
