Description

This print is on the same card as OP29826.

The abbey was founded by St Birinus as the Cathedral of West Saxons in 634 until 675. It has a plan of an aisled chancel, nave with south aisle, west tower and south porch. The chancel was rebuilt in 1340, and the south nave arcades in the early 14th century. The rest of the church is of the 12th-14th century building phase, although the 12th century tower was largely rebuilt in 1602.

The church was restored by James Cranston circa 1845, by William Butterfield in 1846-53, and by George Gilbert Scott in 1859-74.
