Description

On the back of the print is the handwritten note: 'H.W. Taunt called this "site of supposed apse of Hean's Church"- but this was only his own idea and the more extensive excavations of 1922 did not bear out the idea. Hean's Church c700 AD was probably wooden. The apse of Ethelwold's Church c960 AD was found below the remains of the later Abbey Church i.e. behind the Abbey House. The cottages shown in the photograph were marked by Mrs Preston as "The Old Workhouse".'

Additionally there is another note stating: 'Stones excavated near site of Abingdon Abbey - close to house known as "The Abbey"- occupied 1943 by Maj. Gen C. Cooper - formerly by Sir Henry Bliss + before that by Edward Morland'.
