The number of original statues in the reredos and who they represented is not known as they were destroyed after the Reformation and the niches were plastered over. James Wyatt and James Pears redesigned the Chapel in the 1780s, at which time they restored the niches in plaster, and then, after Sir G. G. Scott’s restoration of the chapel, replacement statues were added to these niches c1888 – 1892. These statues were sculpted by Nathaniel Hitch and the reredos as it appears today was designed by John Loughborough Pearson.
This photograph was withdrawn from the open Red Box Collection for conservation reasons during the 2011-2012 Red Box Project.
