Description

The print is mounted on board alongside OP29936 and OP29937.

The original reredos of New College Chapel was destroyed during the Reformation when the statues were smashed and the niches plastered over. The reredos in its current form dates from 1888 – 1892 and is the work of the architect John Loughborough Pearson and the sculptor Nathaniel Hitch.

It appears that the statues have been photographed prior to their placement on the reredos, perhaps whilst still in the workshop of Nathaniel Hitch.

This photograph was withdrawn from the open Red Box Collection for conservation reasons during the 2011-2012 Red Box Project.
