Description

The print is mounted on board alongside OP29940 and OP29942.

The original reredos of New College Chapel was destroyed during the Reformation when the statues were smashed and the niches plastered over. The reredos in its current form dates from 1888 – 1892 and is the work of the architect John Loughborough Pearson and the sculptor Nathaniel Hitch.

It appears that the statue has been photographed prior to its placement on the reredos, perhaps whilst still in the workshop of Nathaniel Hitch.

Archival History

This photograph was withdrawn from the open Red Box Collection for conservation reasons during the 2011-2012 Red Box Project.
