Description

The date of the photograph is incorrectly identified on the reverse of the print as June 1962.

Barnett House was an independent institution, opened in 1914 in the memory of the social reformer Canon Barnett, and intended as a place which combined policy debate with social enquiry and action. Originally housed in the building on the corner of Turl and Broad Street, in 1936 it was relocated to Beaumont Street and then to Wellington Square in 1957 where, after developing a closer relationship with the University of Oxford, it was officially incorporated into it in 1961. Although the institute lost its name in the change, and is now known as the Department of Social Policy and Intervention, the building in Wellington Square still retains it.

Adjacent to the former site of Barnett House is the bookshop called Parker. Both buildings have since been demolished.
