Thomas Hughes, author, MP and judge was born in Uffington in 1822. He is best known for his novel ‘Tom Brown’s School Days’, published in 1857, but was also elected to parliament in the 1860s and 1870s, first for Lambeth and then Frome. Additionally he became Queen’s Counsel in 1869 and was appointed to a county court judgeship in 1882.
This photograph was withdrawn from the open Red Box Collection for conservation reasons during the 2011-2012 Red Box Project.
The photograph was accessioned by the National Buildings Record on 28th May 1963.
