Description

The original caption reads: "Progress near the Shot Tower on the site of the Central Exhibition, Festival of Britain 1951."

The Lion Brewery and Lambeth Lead Works were demolished in 1949 and the site was redeveloped as part of the South Bank Exhibition of the Festival of Britain. The Royal Festival Hall was built on the site of the brewery. The Shot Tower was the only existing building on the site to be retained for the Festival, during which it was used as a radio beacon. The tower was demolished after the Festival of Britain ended.
