Description

The original caption reads: "Their Majesties Visit to the site of the 1951 Exhibition of Live Architecture, Poplar. Presentation of Hugh Casson the Festival Director of Architecture."

The Architecture Exhibition, or Exhibition of Live Architecture, was part of the Festival of Britain. The Lansbury Estate in Poplar formed the bases of the exhibition, which demonstrated principles of modern town planning adopted since the 1930s. Ideas included using a mix of terraced housing and medium-rise flats, small squares and open spaces, paved pedestrian areas, and lower building densities.
