The original caption reads: "Vertical Feature Competition, Festival of Britain 1951, from the left: Michael Powell, B.A. (Cant.) A.R.I.B.A., A.A., Dip., Philip Powell, A.R.I.B.A., A.A., Dip. (hons.), Hidalgo Moya, A.R.I.B.A., A.A.Dip., the designers of the first prize winner."

The 'Skylon' was built in 1950-1951, with the assistance of structural engineer Felix Samuely. The name of the structure was reputedly an amalgamation of words including 'pylon' or 'nylon', and 'skyhook' or 'sky'.
