Description

The original caption reads: "The English Tongue. A display in the Lion and the Unicorn Pavilion showing the origin and the wide diffusion of the English language. South Bank Exhibition, Festival of Britain 1951."

The Pavilion was intended to display "British character and tradition". On the upper level mezzanine in the Pavilion, visitors could learn about the English language through a range of exhibits, including miniature theatres showing popular Shakespeare plays, exhibits showing local idioms, and a 'crown of poetry' with metal figures of English poets.
