Description

In 1944 the Ministry of Works built a small estate of prefabricated houses and flats on Edward Road and West End Gardens, Northolt to understand more about the costs and efficiencies associated with different construction methods.

The original construction process created 13 different properties for comparison and analysis. In late 1945 additional properties were constructed and added to the estate. The details of these buildings were not listed within the original “Demonstration Houses” booklet publication.

The BISF Type C House was unit 15 of the demonstration estate. BISF stood for the British Iron and Steel Federation- the company responsible for building the homes. The properties were steel framed, with half brick and half steel cladding. The house was similar to units 12 and 13, but with some alterations to the window construction and chimney flues.
