This series contains black and white and colour negatives of housing photographed between 1946 and 1989. It includes views of construction, renovation, demolition and residents within their homes. The photography was undertaken or commissioned by the Ministry of Works and its successor bodies including, The Ministry of Public Buildings and Works and the Department of the Environment. The subjects covered include post-war rebuilding and the renovation of war damaged homes, surveys of war damaged homes, the refurbishment of pre-war properties, various forms of prefabricated houses (erection and demolition), privately owned and local authority housing estates, housing co-operatives, flats, housing for the elderly, tower blocks, facilities associated with housing estates, for example nurseries and playgrounds as well as housing provided by employers e.g. Forestry Commission, Admiralty, Royal Air Force and Prison Commission housing. By the 1970s and 1980s much of the photography focusses on 'difficult to let' or dilapidated estates often showing refurbishment works underway. Altogether there are 790 volumes, arranged by subject and date. Each volume contains multiple negatives, comprising circa 8900 negatives in total. Of these circa 5050 were selected to be catalogued in detail and digitised. Cataloguing of these negatives was completed in May 2024. Digitisation is currently ongoing (May 2024). A representative selection of the black and white negatives and all the colour negatives were chosen for detailed cataloguing and digitisation. It was decided to catalogue and digitise all the colour negatives as they were perceived to be at greater risk of deterioration.
This is part of the Series: PSA01/04 Negatives; within the Collection: PSA01 Property Services Agency
