Description

The building was a late mediaeval timber framed structure, which had been re-fronted with brick in the early 19th century, so it is said, when the previous frontage became unsafe. Having been a pub at least since 1774, it closed in 1970 and demolition followed in 1979. It is still trading in this photograph, taken some years before the adjacent buildings, numbers 18 and 19 Barton Street were demolished. Gloucestershire County Council had road widening plans for both Barton Street and Nelson Street. The Nelson Inn was the last building to be demolished in Barton Street as part of this plan.
