A series of 1,659 film and glass negatives of photographs taken by Herbert Edward Tuppen between the 1920s and 1950s. The majority of the photographs are believed to have been taken in the 1930s and 1940s.
Most of the photographs show buildings and views in south England, with the following counties being well-represented: Kent (379 photographs), London (250), West Sussex (206), Surrey (158), East Sussex (120), and Suffolk (86).
Other areas shown include Essex (35 photographs), Hampshire (41), Devon (43), Isle of Wight (22), and Herefordshire (19).
Subjects include scheduled monuments, historic buildings, private houses and street scenes, and public houses and inns. There are also several coastal views and waterscapes. Churches (exterior, interior and fittings) feature heavily. Castles, and ruins are also a particular focus. Castles photographed include Allington, Arundel, Bodiam, Framlingham, Goodrich, Leeds, Lewes, Pevensey, Saltwood, and Westenhanger.
There are 18 photographs of the Crystal Palace and Crystal Palace Park at Sydenham, with seven taken shortly after the devastating fire of November 1936.
Approximately 30 of the photographs show people. There are several portraits, though the majority are informal photographs, group shots, or holiday photographs. None of the subjects have been formally identified though they may show members of the Tuppen family, or friends. Several of the people appear in multiple photographs, which were probably taken at different times.
